My Anxiety Companion has been described as a ‘refreshingly candid’ book, for it’s unique viewpoints on living alongside Anxiety, and focusing on long term recovery, rather than finding an instant cure.
Mel Bonthuys, who has struggled with Anxiety since 2001, was officially diagnosed in 2009, and has dedicated much of her life to trying different methods and techniques to fully rid herself of her anxiety disorder.
However, she found herself mostly disillusioned with many of these methods who promised ‘permanent guaranteed cures’, and after been treated successfully with medication, she decided to take a completely unique approach – by embracing and accepting her anxiety, and trying to find happiness within and along her journey to recovery.
Mel believes that many people think that a diagnosis of Anxiety Disorder means a life of doom and gloom, and wants to show people that even while on your recovery journey, it is possible to be happy and ambitious!
“Recovery from Mental Illness is not about popping a pill every night, and after a few months, you’re cured. If anyone claims this, then they are lying. I firmly don’t believe that!
Recovery from anxiety disorder is not linear!
Each and every person is different, and we all recover differently. Some of us are lucky and find the ultimate cure, but that doesn’t mean the next person will – that is just the reality of it.
Recovery is a long and tough journey, and for some of us, recovery is something that we will be in for the rest of our lives – and I want to show people that this is not a bad thing!
Being in recovery means that you are receiving the treatment that you need.
It means that you are getting better each day, and that should be celebrated!
It means living your life to the fullest, while working at yourself and your mind each and every day!”
This is what makes this book unique!
My Anxiety Companion doesn’t offer any guaranteed cures.
It also don’t tell you to ditch medication, and to live without it!
Instead, It gives you all the options out there, and encourages you to find what works for you!
“What I have found by befriending the anxiety, is that, the symptoms of anxiety gradually begin to disappear on their own. This is because we are training our minds to no longer fear the symptoms, and if we don’t fear them, they can no longer be a bother to us, and once they are no longer a bother to us, they have no power!”
