Herb Gardening For Rookies by Debi Alley

Think you can’t grow anything? Perfect, you’re exactly who this book was written for.

Herb Gardening for Rookies is a simple, no-pressure guide to growing fresh herbs in small spaces, whether that’s a kitchen counter, patio, or tiny balcony. No green thumb required. No complicated setups. Just real-life, beginner-friendly steps that actually work.

Inside, you’ll learn how to start, grow, and harvest herbs like basil, mint, rosemary, and more—without overthinking it (or overwatering it). You’ll also discover easy ways to dry, store, and use your herbs so they don’t go to waste.

Written with humor, honesty, and a “been there, killed that plant” perspective, this book is for anyone looking for a fresh start, a new hobby, or just the simple joy of snipping something you grew yourself.

🌿 Bonus: Learn how to turn your herbs into teas, simple remedies, and everyday kitchen staples.

Author Bio:

So here’s the thing about being a Midwest kid who ended up in California, you never quite lose that Midwestern heart, even when you’re living the West Coast dream. I was raised in a place where people waved at strangers, helped their neighbors, and knew the value of hard work and good soil. It shaped who I am, and I still think the Midwest is one of the most wonderful places to grow up. But California? Well, it’s been pretty good to me too.
These days, my better half and I are slowly embracing being able to travel more at this stage in our life. Whether it’s a mountain escape where the dogs can run free on hiking trails and we can breathe in that pine-scented air, or a coastal escape where we lose track of time watching the waves roll in. The dogs don’t care either way; they’re just thrilled to be along for the ride. And honestly, so are we.
But as much as I love exploring new places, nothing beats the moments when all the kids are home. The house gets loud, the kitchen gets messy, and my heart gets full. Those are the days I live for. Add in long lunch dates with my girlfriends, pickleball matches with friends (where “Wait, what’s the score?” is basically our group mantra), time with friends who’ve become family, and evenings listening to my husband absolutely shred on the guitar—and you’ve pretty much found my happy place.
All of this—the Midwest roots, the California sunshine, the family chaos, the travel adventures, the garden dirt under my fingernails—it all led to The Rookie’s Guide to Herb Gardening. It grew from the same philosophy as my first book, Welcome to the Garden: Raised Bed & Container Gardening for Rookies—that growing things (whether it’s basil or relationships or yourself) is always worth the effort.
