Featured Interview With Vicky Oliver

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I grew up in New York City and I am still here–a native! Uncovering little pieces of New York history interests me. I don't own any pets, but some of my characters have pets.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I started writing very serious odes when I was seven years old. Then I moved into journalism at my various school papers. I also kept a daily diary until I graduated from college. I feel like I've always read and I enjoy many genres, not just the one that I write. Even though I'd never write a poem now, I'll pick up a poetry volume occasionally. Ditto for short stories. I prefer novels, but sometimes it's fun to delve into something diametrically different.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
I enjoy the classics: Little Women, Gone with the Wind, The Great Gatsby, Catcher in the Rye, Harriet the Spy. I also enjoy reading light fare–comedies, farces, quick beach reads. Occasionally, I'll dip into a thriller.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
Firebrands by Vicky Oliver
A sizzling Gilded Age-style tale of morals versus money

The bustling Manhattan of 1908 is a tale of two cities. Downtown, people sleep ten to a room while labor clamors for better working conditions. Meanwhile uptown, along Millionaire’s Row, people reside in Gilded Age palaces. But in this cacophonous, rollicking city, everyone lives in close proximity and paths cross.

In this divided city, two sisters who grew up together and share a close bond, have markedly different visions of what their futures hold. Spirited activist Helena James urges women to save themselves from lives of powerlessness. She outwits the police—who’d much rather harass than help her—and undertakes dangerous missions on behalf of her brave advocacy.

Brimming with twisty suspense, romance, forbidden lust, and humor, Firebrands explores the lighter side of the feminist movement, the darker side of industrialization, and the loving but confounding side of sisterhood. Sure to appeal to fans of the HBO series The Gilded Age, Firebrands is also imbued with the detective-novel atmosphere of The Alienist. At a time when women had few choices, Firebrands is as relevant today as it was over 100 years ago.
