Featured Interview With Storm Ray
Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I grew up a good chunk of my childhood in the Arkansas Valley in Colorado. That man-made desert was my home for a very long time. Some of my earliest memories are of dust storms and rattlesnakes. Now I live in Las Vegas, yes that one, and I am amazed at how green a desert can be.
At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I was a late bloomer when it came to reading, finally being able to read at the age of nine. Within that year my reading level skyrocketed, and I started writing my first stories. I still remember the first novel I tried writing, honestly the concept wasn't too bad for a ten-year-old.
Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
My favorite genres are horror, sapphic, gothic, and surrealism.
I don't think I have enough time to list all my favorite authors, but here are a few that I recommend to everyone. Douglas Adams, Tamsyn Muir, Andrew Joseph White, Nnedi Okorafor, Franz Kafka, Yevgeny Zamyatin, and R. F. Kuang.
Tell us a little about your latest book?
My latest book is a novella called To Be Without. I wrote the first draft in about three days, I barely slept. The editing process has taken months of rewriting and cutting out nonsense.
This book is a horror romance that follows the experiences of Vivian Loughty who is a recently divorced painter as her mind slowly breaks down. Haunted by visions of her ex-wife, she leaves the city and isolates herself. In this isolation, Vivian encounters a strange woman that her brain cannot fully comprehend.
This is a sapphic romance, but it's not "spicy" as some would say. I focus on the relationship dynamics and a happy ending. This is not a "bury your gays" kind of book.
