Featured Interview With Richard Clayman
Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
Fourth-generation Angeleno (Los Angeles). Still there, within a five-minute drive of the house my parents bought when I was one. Above the line in Hollywood for 25 years, writer, producer, director, actor, production exec at most studios and networks. Taught at top film schools for 15 years. With my own film company for the past two decades.
At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I've been reading since I was probably four. Have always written. My current novels grew from my first, multiple award-winning play, Rocky Mountain Sunday, and now span the fictional Colorado town in specific periods from 1860 to 2007. I don't know about you, but every time I read them, I laugh and cry. What a softie, right?
Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
Novels. 18th, 19th Century. Detective fiction. Henry Fielding, George Eliot, Charles Dickens, Jane Austen, Raymond Chandler, Ross MacDonald, Thomas Love Peacock. They all inspire me, and hundreds more, but I suppose the most direct inspiration is whatever I'm reading at the time I'm writing. Currently, Hemingway's "Across the River and Into the Trees." "L.A. Confidential" is on deck.
Tell us a little about your latest book?
Part Five of the Town of Beaver Tales series, "Rocky Mountain Friday (1945)." The folks and their dramas shortly after the end of World War Two. Others in the series (in order) take place in 1992, 2007, 1860-66, and 1873. Part Six, currently being rewritten, is in 1850.
