Featured Interview With Morgan Rylie

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I’ve lived in Wisconsin my whole life. When I was younger, I spent a lot of time with my grandparents, which is something I really cherish (and has even made it into a book). I still live in Wisconsin now with three of my children—my oldest has since moved out and is on his own. We don’t currently have any pets, but over the years we’ve had quite a few—snakes, bearded dragons, geckos, and even a hamster.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I’ve always had a book in my hand for as long as I can remember. One of my earliest memories is being about eight years old on a trip to South Dakota and getting in trouble for reading in the backseat instead of looking at the scenery. Writing came a little later for me—I started around age 12—but I’ve only been writing seriously for about the last 10 years or so.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
My favorite author will always be S.E. Hinton—The Outsiders has had a lasting impact on me. I’m also a big fan of Rebecca Yarros and the way she creates emotionally driven, immersive stories. I tend to gravitate toward fantasy when I read, especially stories with strong emotional depth and character development.

As for inspiration in my own writing, most of my books are influenced by real-life issues—either things I’ve personally experienced or situations that people close to me have gone through. That connection to real emotion is what drives my storytelling.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
My latest book is Heir of the Forgotten, the first in my adult romantasy series. I originally published it in October, but after stepping back from it, I realized there was still more work to be done, so I pulled it and am currently rewriting it completely. This new version has taken the story in a very different direction, but at its core it still carries the same emotional themes I always write about—identity, struggle, and inner conflict. Even in a fantasy setting, I find myself drawn to exploring real emotions and the way characters grow through them.
