Featured Interview With Michelle Childress

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I was born and raised in California, but my storytelling heart has always leaned Southern. I grew up surrounded by books, wide skies, and the kind of family stories that stretch across generations. That mix of West Coast upbringing and Southern roots shapes how I write—my stories tend to live in places where history lingers and relationships run deep.

I live a quiet, family-centered life now, filled with writing, outdoor adventures, and the everyday chaos that somehow always becomes story material. I believe ordinary moments are where the best stories hide.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I don’t remember a time when books weren’t part of my life. I was the kid who carried stories everywhere. Reading felt like stepping into other lives, and writing eventually became my way of understanding my own.

I started writing seriously when I realized stories weren’t just escape—they were connection. They were a way to sit with complicated emotions and turn them into something meaningful. Once I understood that, I never stopped.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
I’m drawn to emotionally honest writers—authors who aren’t afraid to let their characters struggle and grow. I love contemporary fiction and romance that focuses on people first and plot second. Stories that linger.

Writers like Kristin Hannah, Nicholas Sparks, and Robyn Carr inspire me because they balance emotional weight with accessibility. Their books remind me that storytelling doesn’t have to shout to be powerful—it just has to be true.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
My latest novel, Her Heart Knows the Way to Paradise, is a story about grief, healing, and the unexpected places love finds us when we’re rebuilding our lives.

At its center is a woman learning how to stand in a world that suddenly looks unfamiliar. The landscape becomes part of her healing—wide spaces, quiet work, and a community that slowly draws her back into herself. The romance is a slow burn, grounded in trust and emotional honesty. Nothing comes easily in this story, and that’s what makes the love feel earned.

This book took time because it needed space to breathe. I didn’t want to rush the emotional journey. Readers who love small-town heart, layered characters, and stories about second chances will find themselves at home here.
