Featured Interview With Lyn McGinnis

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I was born in Cambridge, Ontario, Canada, in November 1955. I have lived in other parts of Waterloo Region and Toronto. I now live in Waterloo, Ontario. I have a sweet little Cavalier King Charles puppy named Flora.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I grew up in a reading household and was always surrounded by books. I also became a budding artist. These two predilictions were always fused in me. While I have a journalism background, the idea of becoming a novelist came surprisingly late in my life. I have always been creative and have long painted visionary images I would eventually see as part of my epic narrative. For many years, I worked on building the foundation of my fantasy world, with little idea how I could do it justice in novel form. Finally, I came across a simple set of volumes in the public library that provided practical instruction on various aspects of the craft. These opened doors inside me, and suddenly I found the words flowing out of me.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
When I was a young teen, I discovered the 18th-Century British poet, painter, and mystic William Blake. I loved his strange, visionary world and his courage and determination to share it, even though almost no one understood him. Notwithstanding our having nothing in common, I maintain an enduring love for the man and his work. As a teen I was drawn to Science Fiction and Fantasy. My three foundational reads are J.R.R. Tolkien, Frank Herbert’s Dune series and Issac Asimov’s Foundation series.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
Dalinantu Emergence is the third novel in my octology, Anu Awakes Series. Each novel takes place on the Planet Anu, which has a unique ecology, history and mythology. The powers made manifest make clear that it also exists in a similar, but different universe with unique possibilities. Each novel stands alone in time, with all the characters and events focused on a particular era and place. While there is much diversity among the sets of narratives, they are bound by their taking place on the same planet at different times and by the Tatchlan System that underlies their actions. Over forty thousand years have passed since the previous book, ‘Amarel Mountain.’ This period saw the immense prosperity and enrichment of the Koru Cluster-of-Clusters Nation, as well as the creation of many wonders. One of their greatest gifts to Anu was the second most precious of Living Instruments – the Healing Vat. Yet, an even more remarkable legacy from the Koru changed the future. ’Dalinantu Emergence’ is primarily the story of the culmination of the Koru’s most significant series of Epochal Generational Plans. This cumulative labour aimed to bring about a second Cluster-of-Clusters Nation able to grow their own succession of Majastas – now named the Danam Yelda.
