Featured Interview With K.V. Write
Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I was raised in beautiful British Columbia, Canada, where I’ve spent much of my life surrounded by forests, mountains, and small communities that encouraged my imagination from an early age. Today I live in Prince George, British Columbia, and continue to write while growing Equal Myth Press, the independent publishing company I founded.
I’m an author, journalist, and human rights advocate with a passion for stories that explore empathy, justice, morality, and the human experience. Whether I’m writing fiction, creating free resources for writers, or working on new ideas for Equal Myth Press, my goal is always the same: to create something meaningful that leaves the world a little better than I found it.
My husband and I share our home with a 10-year-old cat named Ezra. We rescued him from an abusive home, and over the years he’s become a much-loved member of our family. He’s usually nearby while I’m writing, and like many cats, he seems convinced that my keyboard is the best place in the house to take a nap.
At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I’ve loved stories for as long as I can remember. Growing up, books weren’t just entertainment to me. They were places to explore, ideas to wrestle with, and reminders that a single story could change the way someone sees the world.
I began writing when I was young, creating little stories simply because I enjoyed imagining new worlds and characters. As I grew older, that passion became more purposeful. I realized I wanted to write stories that did more than entertain. I wanted readers to feel something, ask difficult questions, and perhaps leave with a little more empathy than they had before they opened the book.
That passion eventually led me to found Equal Myth Press, giving me the freedom to publish the stories I believed needed to be told while also creating helpful resources for other writers.
Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
Fantasy has always been my favourite genre because it allows writers to explore very real human experiences through extraordinary worlds and characters.
J.R.R. Tolkien has had a tremendous influence on me through The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. His ability to create worlds with depth, history, and hope continues to inspire me. Sherilyn Kenyon has also been a major influence because of the emotional depth she brings to fantasy and the way she develops unforgettable characters. One of my favourite books is Dream Hunter, which left a lasting impression on me as both a reader and a writer.
For my own book, “When The Candle Went Out,” I also found inspiration in the psychological tension of Shirley Jackson and the haunting atmosphere of Edgar Allan Poe. Their work showed me how powerful a story can be when it trusts readers to think for themselves.
Outside of fiction, I read a surprising number of spiritual and personal development books. I’m currently working through Joe Vitale’s collection of books and hope to eventually own and read them all. My favourite so far is The Key. I believe reading widely helps me become a better writer because every genre teaches something different about people.
Tell us a little about your latest book?
My latest book is “When The Candle Went Out,” an illustrated dark urban fantasy novelette inspired by questions surrounding justice, compassion, and the value of a single human life.
The story follows a condemned man during the final hours before his execution. Rather than telling readers what to believe, I wanted to create a story that invites reflection and conversation. As a human rights advocate, I was inspired by the difficult questions surrounding capital punishment, but my goal was never to write a political novel. Instead, I wanted to tell a deeply human story about conscience, remembrance, and the choices that define us.
I spent a great deal of time refining the story because I wanted every scene to serve a purpose. It’s a relatively short book, but I hope readers discover that some of the smallest stories can ask the biggest questions.
