Featured Interview With Gail Daley

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I was born and raised in California, although as a child we moved all over the US. For a few months I lived in Michigan and Ollahoma, but we always returned to California.
My husband of more than 50 years and I live in Fresno, with our grown son, and two cats, although over the years our menagerie has included a lot of dogs and a guinea pig.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I have always been a reader and a story teller. I started writing about my imaginary worlds in High School, but I never published anything until I was in my early 60’s.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
Favorite Authors as a child: Edgar Rice Burroughs, Zane Grey, Louisa May Alcott, Jules Verne, Alistair Maclean
As an adult, I still love these writers, but my taste has expanded to include Louis L’Amour, Donna Andrews, Georgette Heyer, Amanda M Lee, and so many other authors it would be impossible to name all of them. The truth is, I am an omnivorous reader whose taste in books runs the gamut through Science Fiction, history, fantasy, romance and mystery

Tell us a little about your latest book?
The idea for this book and the ones to follow have percolated in the background of my psyche for a long time, but I didn’t start writing the book until I had a vague plotline generated. I am what we writers call a ‘pantser’ (I write by the seat of my pants rather than using a detailed outline). The real joy of writing fiction is you can create people you like and inhabit their world with them for a time.
A bit of background about the parent series which The Inheritance Genome springs from: That particular series actually started because of a wild hair I had about what would happen if the if all the pronouns in the Bible were reversed: you know she, instead of he and Goddess instead of God and the daughter of the goddess, instead of the son of God that kind of thing, and that was how the Clans Vensoog were born.
I actually introduced the premise for the characters in this book and the ones to follow in The Designer People. Lucinda and Juliette who appear in that book as young adults met their genetic doubles who were still children. The characters are NOT clones. I’ve always been fascinated by the idea of genetic manipulation and the idea of creating designer people using DNA and tissue samples already on hand.
I intend to write several books about the next generation of Zack and Katherine‘s children. The first two books will cover Patrice, who is learning to become a legal advocate, and Selick’s year as a police rookie. I decided I was going to involve some older characters like Gorsling who does have a grudge against the O’Teagues. I’m also going to be expanding the clan system with a couple of sub clans that I think might be interesting. A Cajun clan for the for the L’Roux clan, and maybe a couple of Lupin clans for the O’Teague’s.
