Featured Interview With Adeyombo Aderinto
Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I always tell people that to be a "blend" is a blessing. It means that I have had valuable life experiences and now cherish the new blend I am — informed and nourished by human interactions, connections, culture, intellect, and ancestry. It is from these wellsprings I write. It is a resourceful way to appreciate life. I was born in Africa and moved to the US in my prime adolescence. I now reside in California without losing sight of the rest of the world.
At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I started loving writing in my early years in high school. Writing came to me; I didn't seek it. It took the encouragement of my teachers and friends for me to embrace it. They saw something in me I didn't know was there. Sometimes, it takes others for us to be cognizant of our individual essence, talent, or strength.
Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
My motivation for writing is both intrinsic and extrinsic. Extrinsically, I am inspired by many writers, among them George Will, Aaron Cohen, Kipling, and Ngugi. Intrinsically, writing gives me inner bliss. I brim with ideas and respond to them in creative ways, among them writing. I love non-fiction, something realistic that has implications for a better humanity.
Tell us a little about your latest book?
"Oh, America: Nostalgia and Optimism"
We are all an amalgam of our experiences, aptly described as life. This is true in my case. The new book is a reflection tool on the country and, more so, on immigrant experiences and on how the republic's values, ideas, attributes, and achievements have influenced the world. Subtly or sagely, the book offers a reminder that America is a great resource for us all, especially if it continues to uphold the cornerstones of its essence: freedom, democracy, advocacy, and humanity.
