A romance of two teenage neighbours in 1960s England blossoms as they discover sex and gain the hostility of their parents. Against adversity, they cling together and eventually marry and have eight children. But a costly mistake by the young woman brings disaster for the family. Her stubbornness forces her to leave and head on a grim path that endures thirty years. The man is left with ghosts of a beautiful young wife that in life is quickly ageing. It takes the forgiveness of her children, and her failing health, to bring about reconciliation. However, happiness arrives almost too late; she is too ill to remain long enough for her children to get to know her well. The couple’s remarkable bond endures to the end of this sad tale of everlasting love.
