In 2039, Dr. MAIKO NUROSAWA, a scientist at Mechadeus Megacorp., argues with her employer, MARCUS LLOYD, over the usage of neomantium, a material she has discovered on planet Davu 881. Following the argument, Dr. Maiko mysteriously disappears, never to return to her three-year-old daughter who lives with two artificial hearts.
Fifteen years later, in 2054, a heart attack-like pain knocks out a teenage Asian girl in downtown Baytropolis. Later, AKARI DAWN stares at her decade-old bionic left arm and leg, as she massages her two artificial hearts, scoffing at her dead mother, Maiko, for deserting her and her father, and for leaving her with her malfunctioning genes.
Despite the bombings of the third Mechadeus flagship store by a terrorist, VOX, Marcus Lloyd holds a successful presidential rally in his football-sized wine cellar. In the meantime, he also learns that he will require three human hosts with the same bone marrow to successfully create self-conscious AI using neomantium chip.
Akari bashes two high school robots as the machines try to inject a young student with a mandatory chip and is summoned by her high school principal who confronts Akari about her childhood incident in Japan. Later, bullied for her virginity and prosthetics, Akari shatters the bully’s knee.
With her brother, ALEX, PENELOPE agrees to have a neomantium chip implanted and receives a unicorn from Marcus as a gift for the ill children in her orphanage.
Resisting arrest in New Alcatraz illegal casino, Akari punches a policebot and runs away when her prosthetic hearts knock her down again. Flying on a motorbike, Vox lifts her off and they sweep through the city’s skyscrapers, escaping the police drones. Later, hidden in a cave, Akari accepts Vox’s offer to meet his friend in exchange for the real truth about her mother’s death.
In an isolated farmhouse in a forest, Dr. GABRIEL WHITE, a former partner and co-founder of Mechadeus tells Akari about the AI threat and offers to build and substitute Akari’s deteriorating hearts with a one using neomantium chip, as her mother had always intended to. To steal three biochips from Marcus’s heavily-guarded facilities, Akari agrees to have her healthy arm and leg cut off and replaced with military prosthetics.
Under the guise of an expert gamer, Akari duels Alex Lloyd, Marcus’s son, in his VR room, steels the biochip from him but is interrupted by his mech bodyguards. In a messy shootout, Alex gets shot, while Akari escapes, as Vox mows down the building’s security droids from a hellijet.
Marcus shows James Dawn the video footage of Akari shooting and operating on his son, then offers him riches and a special gift in exchange for Akari’s location. Vox and Akari excavate her mother’s bones, and after examining them, discover that the bones belong to her mother’s clone, and that she was likely murdered before the cloning.
Akari sneaks into her apartment to tell her father about the clone but finds her mother, Maiko, cooking dinner for her father. As Akari realizes that the creature is an android replica of her mother, she storms from the building. Later, in a teahouse, Vox and Akari learn that Marcus built his massive cellar on the ground where her mother was last seen.
Akari breaks into a cellar, steals a stained cork, and escapes.
As Akari hides in the office bathroom, Marcus reveals to Dr. White that the stolen cork belongs to the bottle of wine he drank with Maiko Nurosawa on the day she disappeared. Later, Vox scans the tainted cork, which reveals a startling piece of information about her murder’s identity.
Dr. White meets with his identical twin brother, JOHN, aka Vox, and learns that his brother never met Akari and that they are dealing with an impostor.
Armed with the truth from the stained cork, Akari visits her apartment building, as security droids kidnap her father and she fights the android replica of her mother to death.
In a Sex Mall disguised as dominatrix, Akari whips Penelope, steals the biochip from her, then takes her home, where she loses her virginity.
As Akari visits the orphanage with Penelope next morning, a Mechadeus drone shoots at her but kills an orphan. Trapped by security droids, Akari bursts through the building’s window, riding a unicorn. Galloping through clogged-up traffic, she shoots down zipping drones, gores droids on hoverjets and bombs mechanical sabretooths.
Akari, her father warbot LEO and impostor Vox meet Marcus in his wine cellar, and as he releases her father, she asks the mogul about her mother’s blood on the stolen cork then stabs him in the neck. Thousands of wine bottles shatter as Akari and fake Vox engage in a fierce gun battle, zooming drones and security androids. Without ammo, and with fake Vox riddled with bullets, a stranger ropes from the ceiling and lifts Akari out as the cellar collapses and drowns in a sea of wine.
Reeled in the hellijet, she learns that the stranger is John White as he pilots the craft trailed by Mechadeus vessel. As the hellijet catches fire, Akari escapes in an autopod.
At the farmhouse, Akari finds Dr. White strangled, and learns from his mangled robot butler that Marcus Lloyd killed him. As she realizes she can’t contact her father or Leo, can’t activate the doctor’s hellijet, and that fake Vox is probably dead, she sees a geisha emerge from the forest.
Akari crosses the ocean in hyperloop, flies into Tokyo, where she meets Hashimoto himself, who offers to give her a new life in exchange for the neomantium she is carrying. She agrees, and witnesses a hara-kiri performed by one of Hashimoto’s employee. After Akira kills an android who helped the man die, Hashimoto shackles her and sends her to Hokkaido to meet the android’s creator.
She meets the sensei in his alien, ship-like mansion, only to learn that he is a sixteen-year-old boy genius, OLEG, that he is Hashimoto’s captive, and that his father is impostor Vox. Next day, James and Leo free the teens from the compound and fight the giant transformer, as Akari saves Oleg from drowning.
Back in Baytropolis, Akari and Oleg invade Marcus’s mansion while James and Leo fight robots outside. After Marcus confesses and explains all his crimes, a metallic boy with white eyes—a super AI prototype—shoots him.
Akari wakes up with a neomantium heart and notices a dramatic change on her appearance.
