Speechless in Spain explores the sacrifice, dedication and emotional toll required to learn another language. The story follows a young woman who decides to learn Spanish. She went into the experience thinking it would take only a few months to learn Spanish but she was unprepared for what turned out to be years before achieving fluency. Mercedes Luna quits her job to learn Spanish in Madrid. She finds out that learning Spanish takes much more than memorization and is more challenging than she could have imagined. The desire to learn Spanish took her on a journey to Spain but it was also an emotional journey where she felt isolated and alone in a new culture among people with whom she could not connect with easily. Mercedes shares her experiencing dating in a foreign culture and her emotional struggles. There is a constant hope of achieving fluency in Spanish. At what point is someone fluent in a language? How long does fluency take? These questions are not easily answered and it is hard to surrender to goal that is ill-defined. In the end, although Mercedes had achieved her goal one gets the sense that she has learned much more than just a new language.
