This compelling novel by hugely popular British author, Helen Carey, re-creates in all its vivid detail, with excitement, laughter and tears, the amazing story of London during the Second World War.
Opening in September 1939 as war is declared, LAVENDER ROAD Road follows the fictional lives of several people, mostly women, who live in one South London street through the first year of hostilities.
Lavender Road boasts a typically English pub, two rows of terraced working class homes, and overlooking Clapham Common at the top end of the road, a big house owned by the local brewer.
Times are difficult. Everyone in the road suspects that their courage will be tested and that the war will change their lives, perhaps for ever. Mostly they are right.
For Joyce Carter, the outbreak of war means a struggle to keep food on the family table. For her daughter, Jen, it may mean an end of her dream to become an actress. For shy asthmatic Katy Parsons, it offers a chance to break free from the life of an invalid if only she can summon the courage to defy her parents and enrol as a nurse. For Pam Nelson, a sickening see-saw of emotions as she fights attraction to her handsome Irish lodger and a growing distance from her husband who is judged not fit to enlist.

Helen Carey is a bestselling British author, known particularly for her highly acclaimed wartime Lavender Road series, which is now becoming increasingly popular in the US. The difficult times depicted in Helen’s wartime novels seem to strike a chord with readers, and perhaps they gain some kind of reassurance from the strength and resilience of her characters.
LAVENDER ROAD is the first book in the series.
Helen’s fifth Lavender Road book ,THE OTHER SIDE OF THE STREET, has just been published. Its predecessor, LONDON CALLING, was shortlisted for the RoNA Award for best Historical Romance. She also writes travel articles and short stories and other fiction.
Having lived in various different parts of the world, Helen now spends much of her time in Pembrokeshire in West Wales, where she and her husband (and adorable dog, Maisie) run their small coastal farm as a conservation project. Her office window looks out over the Irish Sea and when she is writing she often has to close the curtains so as not to be distracted by the spectacular view!
