About I, a Squealer by Richard Bruns:
The year was 1965. The Beatles, Elvis Presley, and The Righteous Brothers filled the air waves. Television shows like “The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriett” and “The Andy Griffith Show” mirrored the innocence of life in the dusty city of Tucson, Arizona. But the sun-baked desert surrounding Tucson was hiding a sinister secret. A psychopath named Charles Schmid, later nicknamed the “Pied Piper of Tucson” by Life magazine, would steal that innocence away, along with the lives of three beautiful teenage girls.
At the center of these cases was Schmid’s closest friend and confidant, Richard Bruns. It was Bruns who eventually turned Schmid into the authorities, resulting in Schmid’s arrest and conviction for multiple murders. After Schmid’s arrest, Bruns wrote his firsthand account sharing the evolution of his friendship with Schmid, the details of getting involved way in over his head, and how he finally summoned the courage to blow the whistle to end Schmid’s deadly rampage. His firsthand account is now being released to the public for the first time.
This is not a book of memories distorted after years of passing. Rather, this was written over 50 years ago at the time of the trials. Here, Bruns takes you into the scenes and events as only an insider can, shedding new light on the infamous “Pied Piper of Tucson” murders.
