Featured Interview With Shaun Stevenson
Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
Ah, the Pacific Northwest. Home of good coffee, evergreen trees, and rain. I don’t think there could be a better environment for an author. When I’m not writing, I do a lot of thrifting, pickleball, retro videogaming, and reading good books.
At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
My great grandmother had a 1910 edition of THE WIZARD OF OZ, and when she passed away, she passed her set of L. Frank Baum books to my family. I picked up that old book as a second grader and devoured it. I loved the fantasy, the adventure, and I knew I wanted to tell those sorts of stories. In grade school, I was always the kid who wrote the seven page story when we only had to write two pages. I was the kid who spent extra time in the library, picking out a new book to read. The fascination has never stopped!
Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
One of my favorite sections of the bookstore is always the Middle Grade fiction. I love writing in that genre, and I love reading it too. Brandon Mull, Rick Riordan, P.W. Catanese, E.J. Patten, Jerel Law — I really love them all. Fantasy, adventure, action, a quest, I eat that stuff up for breakfast.
However, I also enjoy a good drama. Melody Carlson’s THE OTHER SIDE OF DARKNESS is still one of my favorite novels. I like diving into those sorts of characters and exploring where they’ve been and where they’re going.
Tell us a little about your latest book?
My latest novel, THRONES #1: SECRET OF THE LOST KING is a fantasy adventure about three kids being hunted by the Emperor of the kingdom. Their only hope at freedom is to find the missing king who disappeared twelve years ago. If they can find him, they might stand a chance at defeating the evil gripping the land. However, this missing king has a secret — a devastating one that he’s hidden along with himself. And when that secret comes to light, nothing will ever be the same again.
