Featured Interview With S A Monkress
Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
An Oklahoma native, I transplanted to Orange Grove, on the Mississippi Gulf Coast nine years ago. Retiring from a career at an oil-based company, I began writing. My first book chronicled the saga of an ambitious young woman in the 1900’s Oklahoma oil boom, who dreamed of escaping the usual housework of young women and working outside the home. She wound up building an oil empire! I’ve written three other books and published stories and articles in various anthologies and magazines.
At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I’ve been fascinated with books since I began reading as a child. Raising a family, full-time employment and other things took priority of my time, until I decided to “just do it” in my forties, and began to put down all the ideas which had swirled in my head for years.
Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
My favorite genre to read are thrillers and I particularly enjoy legal stories, so John Grisham is one of my favorite authors. Many people inspire my writing: my high school English teacher, my friends, my rowdy grandkids, my writing group here on the coast and lots of great authors!
Tell us a little about your latest book?
My latest work: “My Gabe,” was written to inspire young women to look inward, to the spirit that dwells within them, to find happiness. After teaching middle school in a very rough neighborhood, I was pleasantly surprised to find numerous copies of the “Twilight” series on the desks of girls I never thought would read a novel! I wanted to write something counter to the dark vampire them.
“When Calli is hurled out of the path of a speeding motorcycle by a mysterious young man, never in her wildest dreams could she have imagined the MAGICAL experiences which lay ahead for her! ”
