Featured Interview With Lashonda Beauregard
Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
My name is Lashonda Beauregard, I’m from Alexandria, La, but I’ve lived in Lafayette, La where I attended college. I’m a graduate of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette with a Bachelors of Science in Apparel Merchandising/Business but writing and music is my passion. I used to be really shy. I was actually voted for most bashful, shyest girl, back in high school. I’m the author of the book The Harlem Renaissance Time Traveler’s Diary, which is my first published book. In addition to writing stories I also enjoy writing poetry and music. I don’t have any pets, but I always loved dogs.
At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I enjoyed reading at an early age. I used to read mystery, fiction, and inspiration books that I would get from the book store and the library. There used to be this book exchange store that I would go to when I was younger. I always loved going to the book store and to the library. There’s something about an old book store, you never know what you will find. I still like to dig through books and I get excited when I find a book that looks interesting and I can’t wait to open it and start reading. I always loved music. I knew a lot of songs, so at a young age I started writing short songs and rhymes. My love of music helped me appreciate poetry so much more, because song lyrics are really just like poetry. I began to get more into writing poetry while I was in college. I was writing poetry and songs before I wrote my first published book.
Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
I feel that there are so many talented authors and great books, so I can’t really say who my favorite author is. I enjoy reading historical fiction, literary fiction, I also read a little science fiction. I’ve always liked mystery books such as Sherlock Holmes. I like to read christian fiction stories and inspirational books by T.D. Jakes and Joel Osteen. It’s good to start your day by reading or listening to something positive. Of course I’m inspired by the all the great writers and authors that where writing before I even started. I thank God for giving me the ability and passion to write, because I really enjoy writing. I think that it is a wonderful feeling to write something, to take something from within and be able to share it with a lot people. You can inspire, move, and encourage people just by what you write down with a pen and paper.
Tell us a little about your latest book?
My book is called The Harlem Renaissance Time Traveler’s Diary which is a fiction book. The main character in my book, West Barrington, is a musician from 1926 Harlem, awakes in 2016 Harlem after falling asleep on the eve of 1927. During West journey in the future he discovers the reason behind his time travel.
I was always interested in the Harlem Renaissance. I was drawn to this period of time because it was such an important time for African Americans and in music. There were a lot of talented writers and musicians during The Harlem Renaissance. In addition to being a writer I also loved music and the love of music also caused me to be curious about this period of time. I really enjoyed writing this book. Because I’ve always loved music, it was fun to walk in the shoes of a musician, which the main character of my book, West Barrington is. I’m thankful that I was creative with the characters in my book and I feel that the audience would really like and connect to the characters. If you’re a fan of time travel books, science fiction, mystery, historical fiction, a music lover, you would love this book. I feel blessed to be able to write as well as have a fiction book published that is based on The Harlem Renaissance.
